Training activities The Barrow Ringing Centre is operated by a training society known as the Barrow and District Society of Church Bell Ringers. The Centre is part of the Lincoln Diocesan Guild, but due to its location also serves ringers from neighbouring territorial associations. There are Society practices twice a week, on Mondays at Barrow (12) and Wednesdays at Elsham (6). Workshops, quarters and peals are organised according to need and demand, at various times and locations, with most Sunday afternoons seeing some activity taking place. The Society produces a monthly newsletter which is available online, by email or post.

Bradford Ringing Centre is operated by the Western Branch of the Yorkshire Association of Change Ringers.
Our first aim is to recruit and train a new band for Bradford Cathedral, then to recruit and teach further new ringers for towers in the branch.
Weekly practices are held on Monday evenings and branch 10 & 12 bell practices are held monthly.
Our second aim is to provide monthly training courses principally for branch members, held on the fourth Saturday morning of each month.
Further courses and coaching sessions will be arranged as required, and we hope to become involved in the Ringing Foundation’s ITTS.

The Centre continues to run about 50 courses each year mainly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, covering bell-handling and listening, plain hunt, raising and lowering individually and in peal, Plain Bob/Grandsire/Stedman Doubles, Little Bob/Kent TB Minor, St Simon’s Group, Reverse Canterbury Group, Grandsire Triples, Cambridge Minor, Bob Major.
The Centre has also been used by adjacent branches of the SDGR for training days and by individuals bringing their learners to the centre. We encourage as many as possible to use the centre’s facilities and our main courses continue to be listening (this is proving increasingly popular) /handling/plain hunt and PB and G Doubles.
We also run a “friends” night as often as possible to try and encourage the helpers to meet together to ring more advanced methods.

Training activities
Castor Ringing School runs training sessions from 10.00am to 12.00 noon on most Saturday mornings throughout the year. The ringing chamber at Castor is particularly spacious with a good rope circle and plenty of seating and the bells are a joy to ring. We also have the use of an adjoining room with teaching facilities. We use tied bells and a simulator and provide tuition in both bell-handling and change ringing. Once our pupils have rung their first quarter peal on an inside bell we encourage them to continue to attend as Helpers. We welcome participants from any Tower and have regular attendees from the Peterborough, Lincoln and Ely Guilds/Associations.

Based at St Mary’s church, the Chigwell Ringing Centre was set up by the Essex Association of Change Ringers using a grant from Essex County Council’s Arts in Essex Small Grants Scheme. The wooden tower houses six bells (8cwt in G), each of which has a sensor connected to a simulator (Abel). The sound-control system allows the bells to be silenced for practice.

The centre operates at a number of towers in East and South East London.
There are two main practices each week, at St James’ Bermondsey on Tuesdays and St Dunstan Stepney on Thursdays. Both start at 7.30pm and the towers are easily accessible by public transport.
We also have a beginners practice most Sunday afternoons at Stepney. We are capable of teaching people from the absolute beginner stage, and welcome new recruits.
At Bermondsey we have a number of teaching aids, and can arrange intensive lessons for new recruits. For those considering returning to ringing, we have an active social life and we regularly ring a variety of methods, from Grandsire, Plain Bob and Stedman. We are happy to help people progress and often attempt quarter peals up to Surprise Major level.

The East Riding Ringing Centre – North Cave, is a very active band, and is committed to the training of its local ringers as well the training of ringers at many other towers within East Yorkshire area.
The Centre promotes the art of change ringing within the area, while also working and standing back to back with the local ringing Societies.
We fully recognise and support the ITTS.
As well as the training we provide for our ringers and others towers, our facilities, which include: full sound control; a fully equipped classroom (below the ringing chamber); a new modern fitted kitchen and a modern toilet block within the church; and good parking; all within a lovely rural village setting, are fully available to other groups and Societies. An offer that has already been taken up by an external group during 2013, the Ringing Centre having been used for two training courses by the Beverley & District Society, in July and September.
We also provide bell maintenance advice for other towers, and carry out the installation of new stays and rope repairs.

I am pleased to report that the Ringing Centre is being put to good use. The number of events held has again increased, there being 65 training events held at the Centre during 2013. There were 42 events arranged by the Centre for the benefit principally of Derbyshire ringers although some Yorkshire ringers have also benefited on many of these occasions. There have been 2 ITTS courses, 2 Chesterfield District training events and this year 19 occasions that the Whiting Society have run training events at the Centre. The Whiting Society events have ranged from Spliced Treble Bob Minor to ‘improving handling’ courses. This has particularly pleased me, as this range of activity benefiting the whole spectrum of the ringing fraternity is what I envisaged for the Centre more than 10 years ago when setting it up. Two Derbyshire bands have benefited from whole band training events helping them move forward using the many benefits of the equipment and philosophy of the Centre. A number of beginners have benefited from handling and other basic training activities. We often get enquiries from beginners looking to get help that is not readily available with their local band, these are always dealt with sympathetically and are welcomed.

In 2013 we have been continuing to run short courses for ringers at all levels of ability. Our teaching belfry now has 10 “bells” giving the opportunity to ring on higher numbers for both methods and call changes. Several local towers use the teaching belfry for special sessions – often concentrating on a single method or using the facilities as a base for an alternative outing. We encourage first quarter peals in various methods – whether it is plain bob or surprise methods. The tower is open to the public on a daily basis (over 60,000 visitors last year) often with ringing demonstrated by the St Martin’s Society band.

Training activities
The Centre provides:
-weekly bell handling workshops (Bampton)
-weekly evening practices – Monday at Huntsham and Thursday at Bampton – Mondays concentrate on the early stages of method ringing, Tusdays provide opportunities for a range of five and six bell methods
– an annual training programme of six Saturday events some with Friday evening theory sessions
– a monthly 8-bell evening practice beyond Plain Bob Major
– a monthly Sunday “theory with tea” session
– a speaker with display boards and handouts for recruitment and/or raising public awareness talks.
Other activities:
– weekly peal attempts at Huntsham
– annual fund raising programme – during 2010 we raised over £3,000 for Help for Heroes.
